Literary Lesvos: From Sappho to Myrivilis
A four-day route through Eresos, Mytilini, Gera, Molyvos and Sykamia.
Follow Lesvos through ancient lyric poetry, the Generation of the 1930s, refugee memory, modern art publishing and the landscapes that shaped Sappho, Alcaeus, Myrivilis, Venezis and Elytis.
This four-day route follows the places that shaped the island’s literature and the places later writers used to interpret war, desire, displacement, sea travel and island memory. It distinguishes documented biography from literary association and avoids forcing every writer into a birthplace narrative.
Day 1: Mytilini, Alcaeus, interwar fiction and refugee publishing
Begin in Mytilini, the ancient city of Alcaeus and the modern setting of Stratis Myrivilis’s The Schoolmistress with the Golden Eyes. Walk from the waterfront into Ermou and Epano Skala, where the Ottoman and refugee layers make the twentieth-century city legible.
Add the castle and archaeological museum for the ancient civic context. The aim is not to identify an invented “poet’s house,” but to understand the dense city of ports, political conflict and cultural exchange in which lyric and modern prose developed.
Day 2: Varia and Gera, art books, folk painting and Elytis
Spend the morning at the Theophilos and Tériade museums in Varia. One preserves the work of a self-taught painter rooted in folk memory; the other explains how the Lesvos-born publisher Tériade worked with major modern artists and transformed illustrated books into complete works of art.
Continue to Papados and the Vranas Olive Press. Founded by the grandfather of Odysseas Elytis, the restored complex connects the poet’s family ties with the industrial economy of Gera. It is a more precise literary stop than simply describing Elytis as “from Gera”: he was born in Heraklion, while his parents came from Lesvos.
Day 3: Molyvos, Sykamia and Skala Sykamias, Myrivilis and the Aeolian coast
Molyvos offers a literary landscape of stone lanes, preserved mansions and the social world evoked by twentieth-century fiction. A house associated with Ilias Venezis survives here, but his biography begins in Ayvalik and later Mytilini; present the Molyvos connection as an association, not a birthplace.
Continue east to Sykamia, the home village of Stratis Myrivilis. The folklore museum includes personal objects and books connected with the writer. Descend to Skala Sykamias and the small chapel on the rock, a landscape inseparable from The Mermaid Madonna and from Myrivilis’s treatment of island and refugee life.
Day 4: Eresos, Sappho and Theophrastus
Finish in Eresos, traditionally associated with the birth of Sappho and securely linked with Theophrastus. Explore inland Eresos, the archaeological collection or ancient remains when accessible, and then continue to Skala Eresou.
The beach and evening life of Skala Eresou belong to the contemporary cultural reception of Sappho, not to a preserved ancient biography. This distinction makes the route stronger: visitors can appreciate both the ancient landscape and the modern communities inspired by it.
