The historic spa settlement

The name says everything: Loutropoli means “spa town” and Thermis means “thermal springs.” The springs here have been known since antiquity (the Romans bathed in these waters) but it was in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that Thermis acquired its present character as a resort. Prosperous families from Mytilini and Constantinople built summer villas here; the thermal establishment drew visitors from across the Ottoman Empire and early modern Greece. A number of Belle Époque mansions and the older thermal buildings survive, giving Thermis a faded but evocative elegance.

The thermal springs of Thermis are the main draw. The mineral-rich, warm waters are traditionally used for bathing, and the historic bathhouse on the waterfront (a large stone building that has operated in various forms for more than a century) remains the focus. Beyond bathing, Thermis offers pleasant walks along the seafront and into the surrounding hills, a small harbour with fishing boats, and the chance to explore the village’s graceful if weathered neoclassical architecture.

The coast near Thermis has a pebble and sand beach, with clear, calm water. The beach is backed by olive trees and the thermal settlement, giving it a quietly picturesque character. Several more beaches in the surrounding area (Pyrgi Thermis, Skala Mistegnon) offer alternatives within a short drive.

Seafood tavernas on the waterfront serve freshly grilled fish, octopus, and shellfish. The proximity to Mytilini means that the full range of island products (ouzo, sardines, local cheese) is well represented on menus here.

The string of villages along this coast (Pyrgi Thermis, Pigi, Mistegna, Skala Mistegnon) are all within a few kilometres. Mytilini is a short drive south, and the northern route continues towards Mantamados and eventually Molyvos.
