Skala Kallonis is Kalloni’s working fishing harbour and the practical base for exploring the gulf’s wetlands, saltpans and shallow beach. It is also home to the island’s best-known Sardine Festival, when the town’s signature catch takes centre stage alongside ouzo and live music. Wetland observation points nearby make it a natural stop for birdwatchers as well as beachgoers.

Fishing harbour, shallow gulf and saltpans

It has developed around its fishing harbour and the extraordinary natural richness of the surrounding area.

The saltpans of Skala Kallonis are among the most important bird habitats in the eastern Mediterranean. The combination of saltpan pools, adjacent marshland, agricultural fields, and the shallow gulf waters creates conditions that attract enormous numbers and varieties of birds, particularly during the spring and autumn migrations. Common species during spring include flamingos, avocets, black-winged stilts, little egrets, little terns, Kentish plovers, and dozens of wader species; raptors including marsh harriers, Montagu’s harriers, and various kestrel and falcon species pass through regularly. The Lesvos Bird Fair, held in spring, celebrates this extraordinary natural spectacle. Even non-specialists will be struck by the sheer abundance of bird life visible from the road alongside the saltpans.

The gulf itself (shallow, warm, and sheltered) is excellent for swimming, and the beach at Skala Kallonis is pleasant, with calm water and a sandy shore. The fishing harbour is active and lively in the early mornings when the night’s catch is landed and sorted.

The tavernas of Skala Kallonis are justly famous for their sardines. The annual Sardine Festival in summer celebrates the local catch with communal cooking, music, and festivities on the harbour. Alongside the sardines, the tavernas serve all manner of fresh Aegean fish and seafood mezedes with cold Lesvos ouzo.

From Skala Kallonis, the gulf road can be driven in either direction, offering continuous birdwatching opportunities. The road west leads around the gulf towards Parakila and the broader gulf perimeter. Sigri is approximately 50 km further west.

Bring binoculars if birdwatching interests you at all, the saltpans here are among the most reliable spots on the island, especially at dawn and dusk.
