Kalloni is the central crossroads town of Lesvos, known for its gulf wetlands, saltpan birdwatching and locally celebrated sardines.

Kalloni sits at the geographic and practical centre of Lesvos, a crossroads town at the head of the wide, shallow Gulf of Kalloni. The gulf’s saltpans and wetlands make this one of the most important birdwatching areas in Europe, and the town itself is inseparable from its sardine tradition, Kalloni sardines are considered among the best in Greece, and the annual Sardine Festival at nearby Skala Kallonis celebrates it. As a gateway to the island’s central and western villages, Kalloni is more transit hub than destination, but a genuinely useful one.
