Thermal Springs of Lesvos
Eftalou, Polichnitos, Lisvori, Thermi and the volcanic origins of island bathing.
Lesvos has one of Greece’s richest thermal landscapes. The springs range from historic sea-level baths at Eftalou to exceptionally hot geological outlets at Polichnitos; current access and health suitability must be checked.
Lesvos’s thermal springs are geological features, historic bathing places and potential wellness experiences. Their character differs sharply from site to site, and not every source has operating public baths at all times.
Why Lesvos has so many hot springs
Rain and surface water descend through faults and fractured rock, heat at depth near old volcanic systems, collect minerals and return to the surface. This process links the springs directly with the island’s UNESCO Global Geopark and with the volcanic history visible across western and northern Lesvos.
Eftalou: thermal water beside the Aegean
Eftalou lies east of Molyvos, where hot water emerges close to sea level through volcanic formations. The setting is exceptional: a historic bath, pebble shore and open horizon. Official visitor information has described seasonal operation, but current access must be checked directly.
Polichnitos: extreme source temperatures
Near Polichnitos, numerous springs emerge along the Almyropotamos. Official geopark information records source temperatures reaching approximately 87.6°C, with mineral deposits colouring the surrounding rock. These are geological outlets, not places for unsupervised immersion; bathing requires managed cooling and appropriate facilities.
Lisvori
The Lisvori springs lie near Agios Ioannis and a stream flowing toward the Gulf of Kalloni. Historic bathing compartments and the rural setting give the site a more intimate character. Current operation, water management and access should be confirmed before making the journey specifically for bathing.
Loutropoli Thermis
Thermi’s hot-water tradition reaches back to antiquity and later supported an early modern resort culture. The springs, older bath buildings and remains of the Sarlitza Palace create a layered spa landscape close to Mytilini.
Gulf of Gera and other thermal sites
Thermal water also appears around the Gulf of Gera, Argenos, Kryfti near Plomari and other locations. Some outlets are primarily geosites or natural phenomena rather than organised baths. Avoid entering very hot, unstable or unmanaged water.

How to plan a thermal visit
- Confirm that the facility is operating on the intended date
- Ask about water temperature, bathing time and contraindications
- Do not bathe alone at remote or unmanaged outlets
- Hydrate and avoid alcohol before hot bathing
- Combine the visit with a nearby village or walk rather than crossing the island for an unverified facility
- Respect historic buildings and do not enter closed structures
