Eresos
Eresos is the birthplace of Sappho — the 6th-century BCE poet whose work survives only in fragments but whose reputation has endured for 2,600 years. The village above and its beach settlement Skala Eresou below occupy the volcanic west of Lesvos, where the geology gives the sand its dark colour and the landscape its elemental quality.
Birthplace of Sappho — the volcanic west

Eresos, Lesvos
Eresos and Skala Eresou — Sappho’s Coast
The western end of Lesvos has a quality unlike anywhere else on the island — volcanic rock, ancient olive trees, the long dark beach of Skala Eresou and the weight of an intellectual heritage that is not performed but simply present. Sappho was born here. Theophrastus was born here (though his career developed in Athens). The landscape shaped them, and visiting still feels like arriving somewhere with a genuine philosophical tradition.
Skala Eresou Beach
Skala Eresou’s beach is one of the longest on Lesvos — around 4 km of dark volcanic sand backed by tamarisks. The volcanic geology that gives this corner of the island its character gives the sand its colour. The water is clean, the beach shelves gradually and the village atmosphere is welcoming and genuinely inclusive. The International Women’s Festival, held in late September, draws visitors from across the world to the birthplace of Sappho.
Ypsilou Monastery
The Monastery of Ypsilou, founded in the 9th century, sits on a volcanic plateau near Antissa and commands views across the western landscape. It holds a significant collection of manuscripts and icons and is one of the most atmospherically located monastic sites in the Aegean. Combined with an Eresos visit, it makes a full day in the volcanic west.
