Walking & Hiking in Lesvos
Walking in Lesvos is a way of reading the island — olive terraces, volcanic ridges, pilgrim routes, forest paths and coastal tracks each tell a different part of the same story.
Mountain trails, coastal paths and volcanic landscape routes

Travel to Lesvos
Mount Olympos from Agiasos — Serious Walk
A full-day ascent through chestnut and oak forest to the highest point on the island at around 968 metres. Views across the entire island and toward Turkey on clear days. Appropriate footwear, adequate water and a current conditions check are essential before setting out. Spring (April–May) and early autumn are the best seasons. Do not attempt in summer without a very early start.
Molyvos to Eftalou — Easy Coastal Path
A coastal path of approximately 5 km through olive groves and above the northern shoreline, with the Eftalou thermal springs as the destination. One of the most rewarding easy walks in northern Lesvos — good views, comfortable terrain and a thermal bath at the end. Allow 1.5–2 hours one way.
Sigri Volcanic Landscape — Moderate
Several routes through the volcanic western landscape connect the town with the Petrified Forest sites and coastal viewpoints. Spring is the best season — the western coast is often very exposed to wind in summer and the volcanic terrain is hot and dry.
Agiasos Chestnut Forest — Easy to Moderate
Trails from the village into the chestnut and oak forest on the Olympos slopes. At their most atmospheric in autumn — leaf colour, chestnut harvest and the smell of pressing oil in the villages below. Pleasant spring walking. Shorter routes can be done in 1–2 hours from the village square.
Practical Guidance for All Walks
- Marked trails on Lesvos vary in quality — some are regularly maintained, others are informal paths that can be hard to follow without GPS tracks
- Download current GPS tracks in advance for any route away from obvious paths
- Carry more water than you expect to need — summer temperatures on exposed trails can be extreme
- Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) are the recommended walking seasons
- Check locally for current conditions — paths erode, seasonal streams dry, access can change
Walking & Hiking in Lesvos — Travel Notes
Walkers are best based in Agiasos (for Olympos trails), Molyvos (for the coastal path) or Sigri (for the volcanic west). See the Where to Stay section for each area.
