Museums of Lesvos

Museums of Lesvos

Lesvos has a museum culture disproportionate to its size — a consequence of its historical depth, its artistic heritage and community commitment to preservation.

From Bronze Age to Picasso — all in one island

Travel to Lesvos

Archaeological Museum of Mytilini

The island’s principal archaeological collection — prehistoric finds from Thermi (one of the oldest Bronze Age sites in the Aegean), Roman-era mosaic floors displayed in the newer building, and Byzantine sculpture. Two buildings in Mytilini city house the collection. Essential for understanding the island’s deep history before exploring the sites.

Theophilos Museum, Varia (near Mytilini)

Dedicated to the self-taught painter Theophilos Hatzimichail (1870–1934), who spent his life painting Greek mythology, historical scenes and everyday Aegean life on walls, barns and whatever surface was available. His work was championed by Paris critics before most Greeks took it seriously. One of the most distinctive and moving art museums in Greece — not because of the space but because of the paintings’ directness.

Teriade Museum, Varia (next to Theophilos Museum)

The publisher Stratis Eleftheriades — known as Tériade — spent his career in Paris working with the greatest artists of the 20th century. He gave the island he was born on one of the most remarkable collections of prints and illustrated books in Europe: works by Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, Giacometti, Miró and others. Both the Theophilos and Teriade museums are in Varia, 4 km south of Mytilini — visit both in the same half-day.

Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, Sigri

The entry point for the Lesvos UNESCO Global Geopark. The geological and palaeobotanical context provided here makes the Petrified Forest field sites far more rewarding. Well-presented exhibits explain how forests tens of millions of years old were preserved by volcanic ash and what the fossilised trees tell us about the ancient climate. Allow at least 90 minutes before going to the forest.

Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production, Agia Paraskevi

A preserved 19th-century steam-powered olive press — one of the most complete industrial heritage sites in Greece. The story of Lesvos’s olive-oil economy at its Ottoman-era peak, told through machinery, buildings and honest interpretation. Allow at least 90 minutes. Check current opening hours.

Vrana Olive Press Museum, Papados (Gera Gulf)

A second historic press in the Gera Gulf area, telling the olive-oil story from a different geographic and social perspective. Combine with a Gera Gulf loop from Mytilini.
