Beaches in Lesvos

Lesvos has beaches for every temperament — long golden strands, dark volcanic shores, thermal coves and rocky swimming spots used only by locals.

From 8km sands to volcanic coves

Lesvos Beaches

Long Sandy Beaches

Vatera (south coast, near Polichnitos) is the longest — approximately 8 km of fine golden sand facing the open Aegean. Genuinely uncrowded by Greek standards. The cape at the western end has remains of a Temple of Dionysos worth visiting on foot. Best for long-beach walks, families and off-season quiet.

Skala Eresou (west coast, near Eresos) offers around 4 km of dark volcanic sand — distinctive in colour, dramatic in setting. Backed by tamarisk trees. The Women’s Festival in late September fills the beach village with a particular energy.

Family and Sheltered Beaches

Anaxos (northwest, near Petra) is Lesvos’s most consistently recommended family beach — shallow, sandy and calm with views to small offshore islands. Facilities available in season.

Skala Kallonis (Gulf of Kalloni) has very shallow gulf water that warms early in the season. Good for young children. Combine with the sardine tavernas and the saltpan flamingos nearby.

Agios Isidoros (near Plomari) is organised and sandy — the most practical beach near the ouzo capital. Choose Ammoudeli for a more local approach.

Thermal and Volcanic Beaches

Eftalou (3 km east of Molyvos) is unique in the Aegean — a pebble cove with a domed stone bathhouse where volcanic spring water mixes with the sea. The experience is old-fashioned and irreplaceable. Pebble entry; water shoes recommended.

Dramatic Coves

Melinda (south, near Plomari) has a small shingle-and-rock cove with exceptionally clear deep water and a taverna that has earned its position. Better for swimmers than waders; water shoes useful. Road is narrow — drive carefully.

City and Accessible Beaches

Tsamakia (Mytilini) is the city beach — walkable from the capital, used by locals, no facilities but convenient for an evening swim.
