Travel to Palaiokipos

Set west of Mesagros and close to Perama, Palaiokipos (also spelled Paleokipos) takes its name from the fertile land around it — “Old Garden.” The village is compact and lived-in, shaped by agriculture and olive cultivation. Narrow streets, stone-built houses, and small neighborhood cafés define its character. Life here moves at a slow pace, closely connected to the seasons and the surrounding landscape.

The area around the village is ideal for short walks through olive groves and low hills, offering a peaceful countryside experience that contrasts nicely with the coastal settlements of the Gera Gulf.

History, culture, and everyday life

Palaiokipos has a long-standing presence in the region and is occasionally mentioned in historical sources due to the birth of Hayreddin Pasha (Barbarossa) in the village, as the island was occupied by the Ottoman Turks at the period.

Architecturally, the village shows traditional Lesvos building styles: stone houses with simple façades, narrow streets, and shaded social spots. There are no major monuments, but the rhythm of place and the surrounding farmland are themselves part of the experience.

Food and drink here follow local tradition. Olive oil is essential to everything; village cafés and tavernas serve dishes anchored in seasonal produce — pies, grilled meats, and legumes, plus sweet treats paired with coffee. The agricultural landscape directly informs the local kitchen.
