Papados
Papados is one of the most historically and architecturally significant villages of the Gera region, located on the western shore of the Gulf of Gera. Larger and more outward-looking than nearby settlements, it reflects the prosperity that olive oil production brought to Lesvos from the 18th to the early 20th century.

Papados sits close to the sea, facing the calm waters of the Gera Gulf, about 27 km from Mytilene. The village developed as an important commercial and administrative center, which is still evident in its urban layout and impressive buildings.
Unlike smaller rural villages, Papados has a more town-like feel, with wide streets, neoclassical mansions, old warehouses, and a strong sense of historical continuity. It remains lively year-round, serving as a local hub for the wider Gera area.
History, culture, and everyday life
The wealth generated by olive oil trade shaped Papados in a visible way. Grand stone mansions, many dating from the late 19th century, line the village streets. These houses belonged to prominent merchant families and showcase refined architectural details, balconies, and courtyards.
Above the village stands the Church of the Taxiarches, one of the most important religious monuments in southern Lesvos. Built in the 19th century on the site of an earlier church, it dominates the settlement both visually and symbolically.
Papados is also associated with important cultural figures, including the painter Theofilos, whose presence in the wider Gera area connects the village to the island’s folk-art tradition.
