Mytilini

Mytilini is the island’s capital and main port, a working city built around a harbour rather than a resort strip — neoclassical mansions from the olive-oil trade era, a Genoese-Byzantine-Ottoman castle on its own headland, an Archaeological Museum with Roman mosaics, and an Ottoman-era layer that includes the Yeni Mosque and the Carsi Hammam. Add the Theophilos and Teriade museums at Varia just south of town, the Ermou market street and harbour ouzeries, and Mytilini reads less like an island capital and more like a small Aegean city with real depth.

For swimming, the closest easy options are the beaches just north and south of town; check current access and facilities locally before planning a beach afternoon around the capital itself.

Harbour ouzeries near the port serve classic Lesvos meze — ouzo alongside small plates of seafood, cheese and olives — while the Ermou market street is the place to find local produce, sweets and everyday food shops.

Mytilini is a genuine working city, so expect traffic and parking pressure in the historic centre; the harbour front and Ermou street are best explored on foot.
